Personal Health Records (5/23/2007)
Recently I was offered the opportunity of creating a personal health record that I could save on a computer flash drive and be able to carry it with me to my physician appointments on my key chain. Is this something I should consider?
Personal Health Records will be standard operating procedure in a few years but at the moment few physician offices have the necessary software to read them. Sooner or later physicians will have software on their practice management systems that will allow them to put your flash drive into a USB port and read your records. Until then this process will not be common. However, this should not stop you from creating a personal health record. Google Personal Health Record. You will find a number of web based solutions to choose from. Research what software you will be using and how compatible it is to commonly utilized software such as Microsoft Word. This will assure you when they become more utilized yours will be able to be read easily by any computer system.

My flash drive came with special software that allows you to encrypt the contents on the drive. Until there are "standards" out there, or even specialized devices, I would suggest protecting this information!
